Grass Shade Tolerant

    shade tolerant
  • In ecology, shade tolerance is a plant's abilities to tolerate low light levels. The term is also used in horticulture and landscaping, although in this context its use is sometimes sloppy, especially with respect to labeling of plants for sale in nurseries.

  • (Shade tolerance) The ability to thrive in low light conditions. Most hardwoods are relatively shade tolerant. Most pines are not.

  • (Shade Tolerance) This is how well a turf works in shaded areas. Some grass types have a better ability to work in areas that get more shade.

    grass
  • Feed (livestock) with grass

  • cover with grass; "The owners decided to grass their property"

  • Cover (an area of ground) with grass

  • narrow-leaved green herbage: grown as lawns; used as pasture for grazing animals; cut and dried as hay

  • Inform the police of criminal activity or plans

  • shoot down, of birds

Driveway flower bed

The taller plants in the back are perennial shade-tolerant impatiens. The tufts of grass in the front are liriope minor (monkey grass).

The monkey grass is clever, I think. I'm trying not to buy a lot of plants for this enormous bed and was looking at a lot of coin to get a nice border along the edge. Today I realized that I have a giant stand of monkey grass on the other side of the driveway. All I have to do is dig up scattered small clumps, and I can have a monkey grass border all along the whole edge of the bed.

Also note the plastic barrier between the dirt and the railroad tie at the bottom right of this picture. That was placed after we lost a crapload of dirt to a rainstorm. Driveway's still filthy with red clay, but we haven't lost any dirt after putting in these barriers
(which are just thick contractor trash bags - cheaper than landscape fabric).

St. Augustine Sod Installation

St. Augustine Sod Installation

After the sprinkler system installation was complete, it was time to plant some sod in the front right side of the house. It was mostly dead due to the amount of shade this area receives. I decided to plant St. Augustine grass because it's shade tolerant.
